As the warm summer months approach, many of us look forward to outdoor activities. However, this season also brings an increased risk of various skin diseases. At Dermago, we believe in proactive skin care and education. Here, we explore common skin conditions that tend to flare up during the summer and how you can protect your skin from them.

1. Heat Rash (Miliaria)

What is it?

Heat rash occurs when sweat ducts become blocked and sweat gets trapped under the skin, causing inflammation and rashes.

Symptoms:

  • Small red bumps

  • Itching or prickling sensation

  • Inflammation

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Prevention: Stay in cool, ventilated areas, wear loose-fitting clothes, and keep the skin dry.

  • Treatment: Use calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and irritation. Cool baths and air conditioning can also help.

2. Fungal Infections

What Are They?

Fungal infections, such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm, thrive in warm, humid conditions, making summer an ideal time for these infections to spread.

Symptoms:

  • Red, itchy, and scaly skin

  • Ring-shaped rashes (ringworm)

  • Cracking and peeling skin between de toes (athlete’s foot)

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Prevention: Keep skin dry and clean, avoid sharing personal items, and wear breathable fabrics.

  • Treatment: Use antifungal creams or powders. For persistent infections, see a dermatologist for prescription medication.

3. Polymorphous Light Eruption (PMLE)

What Is It?

PMLE is a condition where the skin reacts to sunlight exposure, leading to a rash in areas exposed to the sun.

Symptoms:

  • Itchy or burning rash

  • Red spots or blisters

  • Appears a few hours to a day after sun exposure

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Prevention: Gradually increase sun exposure to build tolerance, use high-SPF sunscreen, and wear protective clothing.

  • Treatment: Apply cool compresses, use topical steroids, and avoid sun exposure until symptoms subside.

4. Swimmer's Itch (Cercarial Dermatitis)

What Is It?

Swimmer's itch is caused by an allergic reaction to microscopic parasites found in freshwater lakes and ponds.

Symptoms:

  • Eruption of small red pimples accompanied by itching

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Prevention: Towel off immediately after swimming and avoid swimming in areas known for swimmer’s itch.

  • Treatment: Apply anti-itch creams, take cool baths, and avoid scratching to prevent infection.

5. Photosensitivity Reactions

What Are They?

Photosensitivity reactions occur when the skin becomes unusually sensitive to UV rays, often triggered by certain medications or conditions.

Symptoms:

  • Redness

  • Itching

  • Blistering

Essentially the same symptoms as a sunburn

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Prevention: Check medication side effects for photosensitivity, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing.

  • Treatment: Avoid sun exposure, use cool compresses, and apply soothing lotions.

6. Warts

What Are They?

Warts are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are more likely to spread in warm, moist environments, which are common in summer.

Symptoms:

  • Rough, raised bumps on the skin

  • Commonly found on hands, feet, and other areas prone to cuts and abrasions

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Prevention: Avoid walking barefoot in public places like pools and locker rooms, keep feet dry, and do not share personal items.

  • Treatment: Over-the-counter treatments include salicylic acid and freezing sprays. For persistent warts, visit a dermatologist for more effective treatments.
